Re-Thatching a Roof
When thatching a roof we establish which layers of straw need to be stripped or can be left to provide a good base layer. Usually we just strip the top layer of deteriorated thatch. If a roof is in a dilapidated state we may need to strip it back to the original roof battens and carry out remedial repairs, replacing timber before continuing. We will always liaise with our client and discuss the different options for the roof, making a decision together before proceeding. Mostly we replace the thatch with whatever is already on the roof – wheat or water reed. Occasionally we also work with Long Straw where required. All our work is finished to the highest standard and we can liaise with Conservation and Planning Officers where needed. We advocate the traditional methods of thatching and look to uphold these standards in all our work.
Thatched Roof Ridges
Flush ridges generally last for 8 to 10 years which block ridges will last a little longer, 10 to 12 years. We provide competitive prices and can ridge in any style you require, generally matching the existing ridge on the property, following conservation guidelines.
Rick-thatching

Don’t know what this is? It is sometimes used as a temporary measure to lengthen the age of a deteriorating roof. See picture here of a rick-thatched roof. A roof thatched in a rick-thatch style can last up to 10 years.
Scaffolding
All scaffolding for your thatching requirements can be provided, in accordance with Health and Safety Working at Height. To ensure that Health and Safety guidelines are met on site we always recommend adequate scaffolding to be in place, safeguarding your responsibility to the workers on site. Our sister company Dorset Scaffolding has fully qualified CISRS scaffolders, who work closely with the thatching team, ensuring the scaffolding meets the needs for the thatching required. Ask us for more information on scaffolding. Scaffolding for other projects also available.
